Title: President of Galala University

Professor Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb became the first  Acting President of Galala University (GU) in September 2020. He has been appointed a  professor of General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt since 2008. Prof. Dr.  Ashraf Haider Ghaleb earned his bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Cairo University in 1986 and his Master’s Degree in General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University in 1991. He received his Doctorate Degree from Cairo University in 1996 before being appointed as a general surgery resident in the Department of General Surgery, Kasr Al-Aini from 1988 to 1991. Professor Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb was appointed an  Assistant Lecturer for General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University from 1991 to 1996.

During his diverse academic positions, Prof. Dr. Ashraf Haider Ghaleb started his career as a  Lecturer of  General Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University in 1996 and became a  Professor of General Surgery in 2008. He held the position of Secretary-General of the Board of the General Surgery Department and Advisor to the Vice President of Cairo University for International Affairs from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, he was appointed  Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Misr University for Science and Technology (MUST) and he was promoted to Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 2016 to 2017. In 2017, he became Vice President of Badr University in Cairo (BUC) for graduate studies, scientific research, and international affairs from 2017 to 2020. 

While studying for his Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Ashraf Haider Ghaleb was granted research projects funded by USAID, where he became a Young Scientist Investigatory project from 1992 to 1994. In 1994, he was assigned as Principal Investigator for a major project. Both projects were in the field of cancer research and early detection of cancer in collaboration with New York Medical College, USA. Professor Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb was also trained on endocrine and endoscopic surgery in the University College London and Affiliated Middlesex Hospital, United Kingdom, and University of Edinburgh, Scotland. During his academic career, he supervised many scientific theses for masters and doctoral degrees in General Surgery, Biotechnology, Phytochemistry, and Nursing. Professor Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb is a Certified International Professional Trainer (CIPT) from the University of Missouri, USA, and over the past two decades, he has trained more than 2000 faculty members and teaching assistants on writing competitive research projects skills.

During his career inside and outside Egypt, Acting President Professor Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb participated in the preparation of medical education programs, education quality systems, and accreditation, as well as in the committees on the quality of healthcare and medical services. Moreover, he chaired many committees for international cooperation, as well as signing MoU’s between universities where international agreements were concluded. He is a Member, a Certified Reviewer and an Auditor for the Reform of Undergraduate Medical Program (RUMP) and the Medical Sector Committee which are both affiliated to the Supreme Council of Universities.

Professor  Doctor Ashraf Haider Ghaleb was the chairman of the recruitment committee for selecting faculty members in National Universities in 2019. He was also a member in the preparatory Committee to start the Educational Process of National Universities before becoming GU’s first Acting President.

Title: Vice President of Galala University for Academic Affairs

Professor Tarek Abou El-Maaty, is Galala University’s first Vice President for academic affairs. He co-supervised in establishing Galala University within his role as a member of the higher committee of establishing national universities, MOHE. He’s also a Professor of Textile Dyeing, Damietta University. Professor Tarek Abou El-Maaty earned a Bachelor’s degree in Science as well as a Masters and a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry. He started his academic career as a lecturer in Mansoura University in 1998 before being appointed Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts, Damietta University. He served as a member of the scientific committee for promotion of professors of Applied Art in the Supreme Council of Universities before becoming the Vice President of Damietta University for academic affairs.

Prof. Abou El-Maaty’s research projects revolve around three themes; heterocyclic chemistry, the development of new dyes, and the modification of fabrics and colorant to produce multifunctional textiles. During the past 15 years, he worked on the synthesis of new functional dyes as well as the modification of fabrics to produce multifunctional textiles to be introduced to the market. He succeeded in creating several new dyes and modified fabrics which have antibacterial activity and multifunctional properties. And currently, his group is specialized in dyeing & finishing of textiles under supercritical carbon dioxide medium and this is the only group in the Middle East working with this technology. Also, they established the international joint China-Egypt supercritical dyeing in 2018.

Prof. Tarek Abou El-Maaty received a number of awards including the best researcher Award, Publication Award and recently he won the gold medal (textile field) in Cairo Innovates for two consecutive cycles in 2018 & 2019. He has three patents in the field of textile chemical technology registered at ASRT. He also has over 60 publications and 5 books.

Title: Vice President for International Cooperation, Community Services and Environmental Development

Mohamed El-Sayed El-Shinawi (M.B.B.CH., M.Sc., Ph.D., M.D, FACS) is Galala University’s Vice President for International Cooperation, Community Services and Environmental Development . He is a Professor in the Department of General Surgery-Faculty of Medicine -Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Professor Doctor Mohamed EL-Shinawi is an advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. He’s also an  adjunct Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Maryland University, Baltimore, USA. Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi serves as a  Co-Chair of the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area Initiative “PRIMA Foundation, Barcelona, Spain” and a  Board Member of the National Training Institute. He’s appointed as a  Member of the UFM Bureau for Research and Innovation, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Consultant of General Surgery in several hospitals in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Professor Doctor Mohamed El-Sayed El-Shinawi is the Regional Lead Trainer of the Sequential Trauma Educational programs “STEPs course “ conducted in Egypt and Sudan in collaboration with Maryland University, USA. He is the President of Ain Shams Medical Student Research Association and a member of several prestigious local and international associations and societies as the American Association of Cancer Research. He’s also  a Board Member of the Breast and Gynecological International Cancer Society.

Professor Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi is responsible for all International relations and agreements in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. He participated in many activities in the ministry including the supervision of the RDI program and Egypt-EU partnership Unit. He’s a  Board Member of Egypt-US higher committee in STI. Moreover, he’s responsible for finalizing any agreements between Egypt and global countries.

In addition, Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi is pursuing a career in breast surgery and breast cancer research. He is interested in studying factors contributing to breast cancer survival in Egyptian patients in comparison to Western countries. Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi’s research emphasis is mainly to collaborate with cancer biologists in order to understand the properties of tumor microenvironment aiming to identify novel cellular and molecular pathways that could be therapeutically targeted.

Professor Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi also pursues a career in trauma and emergency care. He served as the former head of the Emergency Hospital, Ain Shams Hospitals. He has successfully completed several local and international training courses in the fields of trauma and emergency care as well as laparoscopic and breast surgery. He is also an affiliate of the University of Maryland in the area of injury research.

Professor Doctor Mohamed El-Shinawi is the co-chair  of the Responsible Science in Egypt Phase 3 committee: Fostering: Academic Curricula.He also served as the Chair for 2 Institutes about Responsible Conduct of research and a leadership Institute in collaboration with the National Academy of Science, USA. He’s taking the lead in Ain Shams University to disseminate this knowledge across Egypt and the region. He is also a member of the U.S. – Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund 2017 Board. He has been awarded several scholarships and awards nationally and internationally. He received the award for 1st Place Abstract Winner in the 6th Middle East Best of CTRC-AACR, San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in January 2012. He was awarded “special guest status “ at ACEP scientific assembly in October, 2011 and 2016. His Biography was included in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare 2011-2012 (8th Edition).

Dr. Mohamed El-Shinawi has 80 peer-reviewed publications and more than 70 oral and poster presentations worldwide in the fields of breast cancer, trauma, and general surgery. He is currently supervising more than 70 junior physicians in master’s and doctoral programs. He is directing breast cancer awareness programs at Ain Shams University and he is an investigator on several projects regarding breast cancer in collaboration with different institutes, academies, and universities in the United States such as Wayne State University, Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Centre, New York Cancer Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Institute, and Boston University. He is the recipient of several grants from the National Academy of Science, Fogarty International Research Collaboration Award “FIRCA” and Avon Foundation and the EU.
